일본 열도의 남서쪽에 있는 동물원에서 새로 태어난 원숭이에게 동화속에 나오는 인어같은 영특한 괴물을 대표하는 Amabie라는 이름을 부쳐 주었다고 한다. 전설에 의하면 이괴물은 전염병을 물리치는 대단한 능력을 갖인 동물로 인식되여 있다는 것이다.
Oita 근처에 있는 Takasaki산의 자연동물들의 서식처에는 일본에서 원숭이들이 유일하게 자연속에서 서식하는 공원이다. 그곳에서 동물원측은 방문객들에게 매년 새로 태어난 원숭이에 이름을 부쳐주는 투표를 실시해 오고 있다.
Amabie라는 이름은 지난 5월 2일 금년도에 첫번째로 태어난 원숭이에 부쳐진 이름이다. 모든 일본인들이 코로나 바이러스 전염병이 하루속히 끝나기를 염원하는 일본인들의 뜻이 담겨져 있는 이름이라고 한다.
Amabie의 이름이 가장 많은 600표를 얻었는데, 그다음으로 Gorin과 도쿄올림픽을 뜻하는 오륜링이 사람들의 관심을 끌었었다.
새로 태어난 원숭이는 암컷으로 길이가 15센티미터였었다. 동물원측은 설명하기를 갖 태어난 원숭이는 그의 엄마 "Pokopoko"를 닮아 성격이 매우 온순한 편이라고 한다.
동물원 관리인 Kimoto Satoshi씨는 설명하기를, Amabie라는 이름은 많은 부담을 느끼게 하는데, 그래도 이원숭이는 건강하게 잘 자라서 관람객들의 기대를 충족 시킬것으로 기대하고 있다라고 감사해 했다.
