캐나다 공군의 곡예 비행단, Snowbirds는 세계적으로 정평이 나있는, 캐나다 공군의 자존심이기도한, 캐나다인들의 사랑을 받는 비행의 마술사들로 구성된 현역 조종사들이다. 이들의 활동은 북미대륙과 유럽여러나라에서 축하비행을 하면서 Spectator들의 사랑을 많이 받는 젊은이들이다.
2일전에 그곡예 비행대대가 Vancouver, BC에서, Covid-19방역퇴치를 하는 제일선의 전문의료인들, 즉 메디칼 닥터, 간호원들 그리고 관련 봉사자들을 응원하기위한 축하와 위로의 곡예비행을 하던중, 한대가 이륙하자마자, 원인모를 사고로 추락하여, 같이 타고있던, Public Affairs담당 Jennifer Casey공군 대위가 현장에서 사망하고, 조종간을 잡은 Richard McDougall 공군대위는 중상을 입는 사고가 발생하여, 캐나다 전국민들로 부터 애도의 조문이 SNS상에서 계속되고 있다.
Snowbirds 비행단은 캐나다 전국을 비행하면서, Covid-19퇴치를 위해 최전선에서 수고하고 봉사하는 전문의료인들과 관계 공무원들의 사기를 높혀주기위해 BC주에서 비행하던중 사고를 당했는데, 이사고가 나기 전에는 토론토에서 축하 비행했었다.
같은날 한국에서는 5.18민주화운동 추념식이 광주항쟁이 있었던 곳에서 문재인 대통령을 포함하여 고관대작들이 즐비하게 도열하고, 시민들이 참석한 가운데 성대히 열렸었다. 민주와 운동이라면, 전국민이 한마음 한뜻이 되여 추념식이 거창하게 열렸어야 했는데, 매년하는 행사지만, 두패로 갈려서,민주화 운동의 진실과 허구를 외치면서 국론을 분열시켜, 마치 후3국시대의 백제 신라때를 생각케 할정도로, 두 Faction에서 마찰이 계속 일고....
광주민주화 운동을 반대한다고 해서 그자체를 인정하지않는것은 아니다. 40년전의 실상을 시원하게 밝혀주는, 실마리가 될수있는 광주민주화운동의 유공자와 연금수령자들의 명단을 속시원히 밝히면 끝날것을, 40년이 지난 오늘까지도 밝히지 못하는건지 안하는건지, 추념식만 하고있다. 이추념식에 참석한 문재인 대통령은 국론통일을 위한 추념식참석이 아니라 국론분열을 부추기는 행사에 참여한 셈이라고 생각된다.
광주민주화 운동이후, 김영삼, 김대중, 노무현, 이명박, 박근혜, 문재인, 이들 6명의 대통령중 세분은 돌아가셨고, 두분은 현정권의 입맛에 맞지 않는다고 감옥에 처넣어 사회와 격리되여 있고, 오직 권력을 두손에 쥐고있는 문재인 대통령만 현재 청와대에서 근무하고 계신다. 지금 국민들이 대통령에게, 5.18진실을 밝히는 차원에서 5.18유공자명단, 유공자연금수령자 명단만이라도 밝혀 달라고 하늘이 놀랄정도로 외치고 있지만, 그분이 읽은 추모사에서는 구름잡는소리같은, "민주화운동의 희생자분들에게 감사한다"라는 요지뿐이었었다.
어제 곡예단의 비행기 한대 추락으로 3천8백만 캐나다인들은 단 한마디의 다른소리없이 모두가 오열하면서, 그분들의 공로를 영원히 기억하겠다는 다짐 ( We'll remember you forever. 또는 We won't forget your sacrifice 등등)을 TV방송, You Tube, Radio방송에서 계속되고, 희생된 두공군대위에 대한 추모의 글이 끝이지 않고있다.
국론이 하나로 똘똘 뭉칠때, 국가의 힘은 더 강해지는 것이다. 특히 지금은 은퇴한 Snowbirds의 조종사 출신들의 희생된 두 조종사들에 대한 칭찬과 자부심과 애국심의 표현은 캐나다인들을 하나로 결속시키는데 가장 효과적인 촉매제 역활을 하고도 남는것 같다는 느낌이었다.
한국에서도 오래전 Fighter Jet비행기가 연습도중 추락사고로 목숨을 잃은 뉴스를 본 기억이 있다. 언론에서 추락사고가 있었다는 뉴스로 끝나고, 조종사분들의 하늘을 지키는 노력과 희생, 그분들이 있었기에 전국민들이 편안히 잠을 잘수있고..등등의 위로의 후속뉴스를 내보내, 국민들의 애국관을 고취시키는 뉴스는 못들었었다. 그후 유족과 사후대책에 대한 여러진행사항에 대해서도 들어본 기억은 없었다. 국민들이 애국관을 어디서 배워야 하는가는 학교교육도 중요하지만, 현실생활에서 발생하는 영웅적 희생을 국가와 언론이 앞장서서 국민들에게 알려주고 계몽시켜서 스스로 애국심이 무엇인가를 느끼도록 해야 한다고 생각한다. 한국은 반만년 역사를 자랑삼아 얘기한다. 캐나다는 겨우 독립된지 152년 지났다. 그5천년 동안에 영웅한명 못만든 민족이다.
Snowbirds 곡예비행단 단장, Mike French중령은 두조종사의 희생에 애도의 뜻을 전하면서, 모든 전투기를 포함한 Snowbirds 곡예기는 출동전에 우리가 하루 3끼 먹듯이, 조종사로서 극히 상식적인 면까지도 복창시키고, 숙지시킨후 비행을 시작한다. Snowbird곡예기는 400시간 비행후에는 항상 분해하여 점검한후 재조립하여 비행을 다시 하기때문에 사고의 원인을 규명하는데는 몇개월 또는 1년 2년 또는 더 긴 시간이 걸릴수도 있다고 했다.
어제의 사고는 조종사가 끝까지 피해를 줄이기위해 할수있는 조치를 다한후 Eject했음에 같은 동료로서 더 가슴이 아리다고 표현했었다. Jennifer Casey대위는 아깝게도 사망했고, Mike McDougall 대위는 현재 회복중에 있다고 한다.
두조종사분들의 명복을 빈다. 이분들의 희생으로 캐나다국민들은 애국관, 애국심에 대한 산교훈을 또한번 배웠다. 이런점에서 너무나 캐나다가 부럽다.
The commanding officer of the Snowbirds said Sunday's crash was a worst-case scenario that became an "absolute worst nightmare."
Speaking in Moose Jaw Monday, Lt.-Col. Mike French said the circumstances leading up to the crash are still not known.
A Snowbirds jet crashed shortly after takeoff in Kamloops, B.C., on Sunday. Capt. Jenn Casey, a public affairs officer with the Snowbirds, died in the crash. The pilot, Capt. Richard McDougall, survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
"Yesterday's circumstances led to the confluence of all those worst-case scenarios and it became our absolute worst nightmare," Lt.-Col. French said at a media briefing.
The Snowbirds were doing a cross-country tour to raise people's spirits during the COVID-19 pandemic. The crash caused a residential fire.
Lt.-Col. French described Casey as "a tireless and energetic officer."
"She absolutely loved this job," he said. "Her loss is a serious blow not only to our team but to the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Armed Forces as a whole."
Prior to the crash, both McDougall and Casey ejected. French said McDougall would have ordered the ejection only after all options had run out.
"Our pilots are highly trained to do this manoeuvre," he said. "Not only that, we brief it before takeoff every time. And what you saw yesterday was the confluence of a whole bunch of intersecting circumstances where it led to our worst-case scenario."
French said pilots do everything they can to mitigate the risks to the public.
"It's absolutely our first priority as pilots in these airplanes to consider the safety of the public, the safety of our personnel and the safety of the protection of equipment and preservation of property," he said.
The mother of a Canadian Forces Snowbirds pilot says her son is
expected to recover after suffering serious injuries in the crash that
killed a fellow captain on Sunday.
Capt. Richard MacDougall, 34,
parachuted out of the plane and landed on a roof in Kamloops, B.C., a
few houses away from the crash site.
Paulette
Richard of Dieppe, N.B., said she spoke to MacDougall by phone after he
was hospitalized. She said his injuries are not life-threatening and
he's in stable condition.
"We basically got in touch and spoke
with what mother and son would say in moments like this," Richard said.
"'You're okay?' And 'I'm glad you're OK.' And 'We're there for you and
we will support you through this difficult time.'"
Capt Jenn Casey of Halifax, who was flying with MacDougall, was killed in the accident.
The Snowbirds have been on a cross-country tour to lift Canadians' spirits amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Richard was at home when she heard about the crash.
She
turned on her TV and saw video of the plane taking off from the
Kamloops Airport, veering upward, circling the tarmac and then
nosediving. The CT-114 Tutor aircraft burst into flames in the front
yard of a house in a residential area.
Investigation could take a year to complete
The accident is still under investigation. French said typically the investigator will provide a quick snapshot within about 30 days, but the full investigation can take up to a year or longer to complete.About every second year, once the planes accumulate 400 hours of flying time, the CT-114 Tutor planes are torn down and rebuilt, French said, so the planes are in "mint condition."
He said planes are also inspected every time prior to flying by avionics people, aircraft structures people, safety systems people and the pilot.
For now, the Snowbirds are grounded, though French said he hopes the mission continues.
"As Canadian ambassadors, we demonstrate the skill, professionalism and teamwork of the Canadian Forces and we serve as a platform for recruiting. It's a mission that I can get behind, it's a mission I believe in and it's a mission that I believe is important."
