1. Tiger Woods

Turned Professional: 1996
Despite all the controversy and disappointment over the past few years, golf forever changed in 1997 when Tiger Woods dismantled Augusta National. 79 wins on tour and 14 majors are both good for second all-time, but that doesn’t matter because the man elevated the sport of golf and made it what it is today. The numbers are staggering: lowest scoring average in history, 18-under par at Augusta in 1997, winning the US Open by 15 strokes 2000, and completing the career Grand Slam before turning 25 years old.
Simply put, there will never be another Tiger Woods, as he is more than deserving of his title as the greatest golfer of all-time.

2. Jack Nicklaus

Turned Professional: 1961
For many, the Golden Bear is the greatest player of all-time, and his achievements speak for themselves. 18 major championships, six green jackets, five-time player of the year, and 73 wins on tour. Perhaps the most incredible statistic of all is that he finished runner up in a major 19 times. At the age of 46, backed by arguably the greatest nine-hole run in golf history, Nicklaus won his sixth green jacket at Augusta. He was the best during his time, and his continued success over the length of his career is unparalleled.

3. Bobby Jones

Turned Professional: Never
Jones spent much of his career as an amateur, but that did not stop him from winning just about every golf tournament. During his playing days in the 1920s, he was the best golfer on the planet and everyone knew it - kids wanted to be him and competitors wanted to beat him. At the time, the four biggest events were the US Open, US Amateur, Open Championship, and British Amateur. Jones won those events a total of 13 times in his storied career, and won all four in 1930. Following his dominant season, Jones retired from golf at the young age of 28 and to this day, it is one of the greatest “what if” stories in the history of sports.

4. Ben Hogan

Turned Professional: 1930
Hogan is an incredible story of overcoming adversity both on and off the course. Despite struggling to break through on tour, Hogan hit his peak in the early 50s and had one of golf’s greatest years, winning the Masters and both Opens in 1953. A car crash later in his career nearly killed him and caused a long history of injuries that stopped him short of potentially being the best ever. He finished his career with 64 wins and nine major titles, both ranking fourth all-time.

5. Sam Snead

Turned Professional: 1937
Sam Snead holds the record for most wins on the PGA Tour with 82 - a record that has stood for more than 50 years. Snead and Ben Hogan dominated golf during the 1940s and 50s. His seven major championships may be diminished by the fact that he never won a US Open, a tournament that was near and dear to his heart. With the uncertainty of Tiger Woods over the past few years, Snead’s record of 82 wins may never be topped.
