요즘 토론토 시내의 어느 거리를 가든지, 교통체증으로 짜증이 안나는 운전자는 없을 것이다.
10월 27일 토론토 시장(Mayor)선거를 앞두고, 선두주자들의 교통체증 해소 방안을 들어보면 공상누각을 짖은 형국의 허구만 남발하고 있는것 같아 더 짜증이 난다.
토론토 시내 서쪽에서 시내를 관통하여 동쪽 Pickering 쪽으로 갈려면, Highway, Don Valley, Kingston Rd, 또는 Local Road를 관통해야 하는데, 교통체증이 걸려있지 않은 길이 없다.
남쪽 끝에서 북쪽인 North York을 갈려도 교통체증은 똑 같다. 정말로 짜증이다.
전차는 덮친데 덮친격으로 길한가운데를 막고 차량의 흐름을 완전히 막아 버린다. 거기다 고장이 났을경우는 정말로 운전자들을 미치게 한다. 왜 이런 19세기경에나 사용했던 전차를 굳이 고집하는지 그이유를 알길이 없다.
일본의 도쿄거리처럼, 시내의 교통 신호들을 모두 연동시켜 한쪽 방향으로 달릴때는 신호가 똑같이 바뀌어 마치 고속도로를 달리는 효과를 낼수 있는, 쉬운 방법이 있는데도 그런 아이디어을 내는 후보는 하나도 없다. 공약으로 내건 공약은 Smart Tracks 건설, LRT 건설, 지하철 건설 정도다. 그나마 지하철건설은 Long term으로 봤을때 현실성이 있으나, 그외의 공약은 일회용 반찬고를 부치는 속임수인것 같아 더욱 안타깝다.
그래서 선두주자 후보 두사람에게 나의 생각을 아래와 같이 적어서 이멜로 보내봤다.
What I am mentioning is not for highway traffic chaos, but city core in the city of Toronto area. Can you study my opinions? Here are:
1. The most of city local roads are constructed like grids that means roads spread from south to north, east to west. So if you have all the traffic lights interconnected, then traffics would run like highways without hurdles of stopping that happens under current traffic signal light system. Also if you have a chance to look at the traffic signal systems of Tokyo, Japan would be much helpful to understand.
2. Street car operation system must demolished entirely and put buses instead. Street cars operation, I believe strongly, doesn't help any congested traffic stream in downtown, but stays as hurdles.
Running intervals between street cars have not been stabled that some times in 2 minutes, sometimes over 40 minutes because street cars run on same track that allows only one street car.
Here are many reasons not only blocking traffic flows but other reasons as follows :
A. To construct railway system, power lines on top of roof of car, separate work shops, separate mechanics that need huge operating budgets. But input buses instead street car on the route, we can use less budget not only that but blocking traffic flows by street cars that happens when passengers get on or off the street car. And when street car stopped because of broken down, in this case it is nothing but hurdles of traffic flowing on the road in which traffic streams jammed all the time.
B. Trend of operating street car system in big cities like Toronto all over the world has been demolished since long time ago but put buses instead. Some cities has still operating but you should concentrate that they have separate rail tracks that doesn't bother traffic flows. If you see the Istanbul, Turkey then you will get the confidence why we need to demolish street cars operation.
Taking this concept, we can save not only huge budget but traffic jam solved for sure. Thank you.
