미국서부 와싱턴주 산속에서 산악 Biker 표범공격으로 사망, 다른 Biker는 큰 부상 - 옛날에 호랑이가 사람잡아 먹었다는 증거.

호랑이 담배먹던 시절에는 자주 일어났었던, 호랑이가 사람을 잡아먹었다는 얘기를 어렸을적에 많이 들었었다.  내가살고 있는 온타리오주의 북부 산림지역에서는 가끔씩 곰(Black Bear)이 Trekker를 공격하여 사망하거나 크게 다쳤다는 뉴스는 들었던 기억이 있다.

미국 서북부, 와싱턴주의 Seattle시 인근에 있는 Cascade Mountain에서  산악자전거를 타고 Trekking을 하던 Bikers가 산악사자(Cougar)의 공격을 받아, 한명은 현장에서 사망하고, 다른 한명은 큰 상처를 입고, 현재 병원에 입원중에 있다는, 호랑이가 사람을 잡아먹었다는 믿기지 않는 호랑이의 공격이 현대사회에서도 일어나고 있음을 보여준 충격적인 뉴스가 있었다.

현재 산악사자의 공격을 받은 Biker들의 신상은 알려지지 않고있다고 한다.

와싱턴주의 물고기와야생동물관리담당책임자, Alan Myer씨의 설명에 따르면, 두남자가 산악자전거를 타고 산속 Trail을 달리는데, 갑자기 동료한명이 비명소리를 지르는것을 들었는데, 알고보니 그들은  Cougar한마리가 뒤쫒아오고 있다는것을 알아차린것이다.  이들은 Cougar가 위험을 느끼고 공격할만한 빌미가되는 행동을 하지 않았었다고 한다.

이들 Biker들은 타고있던 자전거를 휘두르면서 Cougar와 싸워,결국 Cougar는 숲속으로 도망쳤었다고

한다. 

생명을 건진 Biker는 당시를 설명하면서, 자기머리는 이미 Cougar 입속에 완전히 들어가 있는 상태였었는데, 이에 놀란 다른 Biker가 도망가는것을 본 Cougar가 뒤쫒아가는 바람에 살아남아, 다시 Bike를 타고 약 2마일을 달려가 911에 신고를 했었다고 한다.

신고를받은 산림 보안관들이 현장에  도착했을때, Cougar는  사망한 남자의 옆에 서 있는것을 발견하고 바로 총을 쐈으나, 숲속으로 도망쳤었었지만, 산림보안관들은 Cougar가 도망간 Route를 추적하여 Cougar를 발견하고 바로 사살했다고 한다.  이번 Cougar의  사람공격은 지난 100년 동안에  2번째로 일어난 인명 살상이었다고 설명했다.

Cougar는 산악 사자(Mountain lion), puma, panther 등등 여러 이름으로 불려지고 있으나, 전문가들의 설명에 따르면 다 똑같은 고양이과의 야생동물이라고 한다. 이렇게 여러 이름으로 불려지는 이유는, 지역에 따라, 또 이를 본 사람들이 다르게 불러서 이름이 여러개라고 한다.

(CNN)The survivor of a cougar attack in the Cascade Mountains near Seattle is recounting a harrowing story that left a fellow cyclist dead.

The King County Sheriff's Office says the two mountain bikers were attacked along a trail Saturday morning in North Bend, Washington. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, and another one was taken to a nearby hospital. The victims have not been identified.

The suspected animal was killed.

"Fish and Wildlife has euthanized the cougar that is believed to be responsible for killing one man and attacking another," the Sheriff's Office tweeted.

Capt. Alan Myers of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife told CNN affiliate KOMO that the men were riding their bikes when one of them heard "a scream from his partner and sees they're being chased by a cougar." Myers said the men did not provoke the attack.

The men fought it off once, swinging their bikes and the cougar ran back in the woods, Myers told the affiliate.

The man who survived said he had his entire head in the cougar's mouth, but his friend ran away and the animal chased him, officials told KOMO.

The Sheriff's Office said the survivor was able to ride two miles for reception to call 911. When Wildlife officials arrived at the scene, they found the cougar standing over the dead man's body. The animal ran away after they shot it, but they later tracked it down and killed it.

Authorities said this is the second cougar attack death in Washington state in the past 100 years.

Cougars are also known as mountain lions, pumas and panthers.
