사진으로 되돌아 보는 2017: The year in review.

It was my first week in Suwon, South Korea, working as an English language teacher. I was fresh out of university from the US state of Wisconsin, on my first international job contract and impossibly excited. I didn’t know it at the time, but South Korea would be my home for the next four years.
Throughout those years, this curious ‘our’ or ‘we’ – in Korean, ‘uri’ – cropped up again and again. Out of all the words explained to me, it was the one to make the biggest impression and leave the deepest, most enduring mark. Because, as it turned out, uri wasn’t a mere grammar point, it was a cultural canon. It captured the very essence of a nation.
“Korean people use ‘uri’ when something is shared by a group or community, or when many members in a group or community possess the same or similar kind of thing,” Beom Lee, a Korean language professor at Columbia University, told me in an interview. “[It’s] based on our collectivist culture.”
South Korea’s communal values are tied to its compact size, ethnically homogenous population and ardent nationalism. Here, a house – even one you pay for – is not yours; it’s ours. Likewise, my company is our company, my school is our school and my family is our family. Just because I might own or belong to something individually doesn’t mean others do not have a similar experience of ownership or belonging. To say ‘my’ is almost egocentric.

“Korean people always use uri nara(our country) instead of nae nara(my country). 'Nae nara' sounds weird. It sounds like they own the country,” Lee said. “Nae anae (my wife) sounds like he is the only person who has a wife in Korea.”
Above all, the country’s cultural collectivism is a testament to its long history of Confucianism. While South Korea has outgrown its dynasty-era, class-based hierarchy, it holds onto its Confucian ethics that dictate individuals should approach social contexts – from ordering food and drinks with friends to riding public transport with strangers – with the group in mind. In group networks, the ‘we’ is the collective Korean self, according to Boston University cultural studies professor Hee-an Choi, and it’s indispensable to the ‘I’.
“There is no clear boundary between the word ‘I’ and the word ‘we’,” Choi writes in her book A Postcolonial Self. “As the usage of the words ‘we’ and ‘I’ are often interchangeable, so too is the identity of the ‘we’ often interchangeable with the identity of the ‘I.’ The meanings of ‘we’ and ‘I’ are negotiable not only in colloquial Korean usage but also in the consciousness and unconsciousness of Korean minds.”
Not long after I joined Mae-hyang as its only native English language teacher, I also became its only non-native Korean language student. My instructors, a giggly gaggle of teenaged girls in red plaid uniforms, would meet me in my classroom after school, notebooks, flashcards and dictionaries in hand and grins spread wide across their faces. “You are a student, just like us!” they said. “Yes, I am!” I smiled.
It wasn’t only my students who were eager to be my teachers.
It was also my co-workers, bosses, neighbours, landlords and even the occasional taxi driver or shop assistant or bartender. They all took the opportunity to teach me a thing or two about this tongue that once belonged to me, but then suddenly did not when I was adopted to the US from South Korea as a child. “You are Korean,” they would tell me, “so it’s important for you to speak the language that Koreans speak.”
Being Korean meant knowing Korean. To understand myself was to make sense of the country. Such notions were blurry to me then, but would eventually come into focus as one and the same, at least based on traditional attitudes of Korean togetherness.
The 1400s in Korea was the golden age of its Joseon Dynasty, which reigned for five centuries and counts the Korean alphabet among its numerous scientific and cultural legacies. Before then, the kingdom, lacking a script of its own, borrowed Chinese characters to write Korean speech. But the classical Chinese system was too difficult to be democratic, its logographic nature ill-suited to Korean’s complex grammar. Seeing that large sectors of society were unable to adequately express themselves, King Sejong commissioned the invention of Hangeul in 1443.
One of the few scripts in the world to be deliberately designed, not organically evolved, Hangeul was intended to be easy for everyone, from the richest royalty to the poorest peasant, to learn how to read and write.

“While Americans generally have an egalitarian and individualistic consciousness, highly valuing personal autonomy, Korean interpersonal relations are, in general, still strongly tied to social hierarchism and collectivist ideals, highly valuing interpersonal dependency,” Sohn wrote in his book Korean Language in Culture and Society.
When Choi, the librarian, met her American husband, Julio Moreno, in South Korea, the contrasts between their two cultural communications became all the more apparent. Moreno, too, noted misunderstandings. An English language teacher and blogger, he recalls overhearing his students chatting about “their mother” and wondering how so many of them could be siblings. “It was very confusing,” Moreno laughed.

Grasping singular and plural possessive pronouns, professional translator and interpreter Kyung-hwa Martin can attest, is one of the greatest challenges for Koreans studying English and vice versa. Ultimately, learning another language necessitates learning another perspective. “Language and culture are embedded in each other. Language reflects culture and culture reflects language,” said Martin, who moved from Seoul to Virginia. “When you learn a different language, you have to think differently.”
For me, thinking differently didn’t come easy.
If one half of my most idealised identity was supposed to be American independence and exceptionalism, then the other half was Korean collectivism. It was a dichotomy I didn’t know how to reconcile. And the consequences weighed heavily. But the disappointment I so routinely sensed from my peers, I came to realise, wasn’t the condemnation I mistook it for, but an innate yearning for unity. It’s a lesson I still sometimes forget, but I know I can rely on uri to remind me.

Hailing the unity of the Security Council vote and referring to leader Kim Jong Un, Haley said that, "we will continue to match the Kim regime's choice of aggressive action with actions of international sanctions." North Korea, she said, is "this most tragic example of evil in the modern world."
President Donald Trump chimed in with a tweet noting the vote. "The United Nations Security Council just voted 15-0 in favor of additional Sanctions on North Korea. The World wants Peace, not Death!" he said.

    "Before it is too late"

Other countries at the Security Council meeting appealed for a greater effort to ease tensions and find a way to negotiate.
French Ambassador to the UN François Delattre said his country "welcomes the resumption of discussions, and the sooner the better," adding that "we are still awaiting clear-cut signs from the regime."
The representative from Uruguay called for negotiations "before it is too late." South Korea's ambassador stressed that, "sanctions are not an end in themselves, but an effective means to bring North Korea back on the track" for a peaceful diplomatic solution. "I sincerely hope the DPRK will take this message seriously," Cho Tae-yul said, adding his hope that North Korea will "abandon the delusional idea of pursuing security" through nuclear weapons.

Some countries took apparent digs at the US. China called for an "immediate end" to what it characterized as overheated rhetoric, a call that could reference Trump just as easily as it does Kim. And China once again pushed its proposal that North Korea stop its missile tests in exchange for a US and South Korean agreement to stop all large-scale military exercises in the region.

Russia's ambassador to the UN complained that the US had rushed the resolution through with several last-minute amendments and about the measures on North Korean workers. Russia officially has some 40,000 North Korean workers, and possibly more, many of whom work in construction and send significant amounts of money home.
The resolution's requirement of a 24-month period for North Korean workers to return home "is the minimum acceptable period necessary to deal with the logistical aspects of the issue," the Russian ambassador said, before adding one last criticism of the resolution.
"Unfortunately, our call to preclude a further escalation of tensions, to revise the policy of mutual intimidation, was not heeded," he said.

(It is one of the largest ground forces in the world.)

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)A young, "low-ranking" North Korean soldier defected to South Korea across the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between the two countries early Thursday morning, South Korea said.
The soldier, aged in his late teens or early 20s, was carrying a personal firearm when he crossed the DMZ in heavy fog just after 8.00 a.m. local time, South Korean authorities said.
It is the second defection across the heavily-guarded border in less than two months; another North Korean soldier was shot multiple times while dramatically escaping to the South on November 13.
No shots were fired during the latest defection, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. However, more than one hour later, around 9.30 a.m., South Korean soldiers fired 20 warning shots as North Korean soldiers appeared to search for the defector.
Several other gunshots were heard from the northern side of the border at 10.13 a.m. and 10.16 a.m., South Korean authorities said.
The defector in custody and is likely being questioned as authorities investigate the reasons behind his defection, and seek other information about his life in one of the world's most reclusive states.
Another North Korean soldier who defected to the South spoke to CNN in November about the harsh conditions endured by military servicemen in North Korea.
Kang Ri Hyuk said soldiers in his home country were dying of hunger and disease.
"There are countless soldiers in North Korea who cannot even walk because of malnourishment," he told CNN. "The UN is sending rice and fertilizer to North Korea, but not a single grain goes to North Korea's ordinary people."

      Fourth defection in 2017

Prior to this year, there had only been four defections from North Korea's armed forces in the past five years: one in 2016, one in 2015 and two in 2012.
John Delury, associate professor at the Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies in Seoul, told CNN it was far to early to draw any conclusions from the numbers of defections in 2017.
"There are often individual motives to spur this ... four in a year is not enough to constitute evidence of something systemic," he said. "There would be need to be a lot more (defections) I would say."
      Video shows N. Korean defector's escape 03:17
The most high profile was in November when a North Korean defector, named Oh Chong Song, was shot multiple times after driving to the border in a jeep.
While attempting to pursue Oh, North Korean soldiers fired across the demilitarized zone, violating the Korean War armistice.
Following Oh's desertion, fellow deserter Kang told CNN the soldier's flight would give hope to other military members hoping to flee.
"This incident was an opportunity to give courage to other North Korean soldiers serving in the military in the DMZ," he said in November. "I think we could see another soldier crossing the border with a jeep."
The North Korean military has more than 1.2 million active soldiers and a further 7.7 million in reserves. It is one of the largest ground forces in the world.

(CNN) — A warning to travelers heading below sea level to dine at luxury Maldives resort Hurawalhi's 5.8 Undersea Restaurant.
Your manners will likely be left up on the surface -- along with your shoes.
Cutting off one's companion mid-sentence is almost a certainty as you rush to point out one of the remarkable sea creatures swimming by, whether it's a reef shark or -- if you're lucky -- an octopus.
You might even find yourself giving your dining partner the silent treatment, mesmerized by the marine life that have made the stunning coral reef their home, from colorful parrot fish to moray eels and tiny mantis shrimp.

      Largest of its kind

Opened in late 2016, 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is the world's largest all-glass underwater restaurant. Its name comes from the depth at which the restaurant sits -- 5.8 meters (about 19 feet) below the surface.
This huge construction weighs 400 metric tonnes and is 90 square meters.

To access the restaurant, diners walk across a pier towards the resort's over-water Aquarium Restaurant and head down a separate path to a long, winding staircase.

Each of 5.8's 10 tables offers views of the outside action.
The coral landscape, which stretches around the edges of the tubular structure, draws all shapes and sizes of sea life right up to the glass, leaving you with the inescapable feeling that you're the one on display and the sea life are actually looking in at you.

Does the food match the scenery?

It's tempting to feel sorry for the chef tasked with creating a menu that competes with these views.
But during a recent visit by CNN Travel, German chef Bjoern van den Oever's dishes had us not just excited for what was swimming by the glass, but what would next appear on our plates during the seven-course dinner.
"it's a lot of pressure," admits van den Oever, who works with a team of six chefs.
"You have to keep up with the surroundings, you don't want people getting bored by the food. So we have to always keep the food exciting as well."

As a result, he says lot of people have underestimated the restaurant and come in with low expectations -- only to be blown away.

"We wanted to create something special," he says.

"More like where people can sit and have a whole theater of things going on. Not only the fish outside, but also on the plate. So everything was very inspired by the surroundings: the coral life, the fish. And there's a lot of small details where you can look on the coral and you get the reflection on your plate."
Courses include a mix of unique meat and seafood-based dishes that emphasize the flavors of the local and imported ingredients. For example, there's the "Diver Scallops," served with apricot and almond vinaigrette.
"We take one product and we try to make the best out of it," says the chef.

"So you have scallop in two ways: You have the seared scallop and then the scallop tartare. Which shows, basically, both the raw and the cooked scallop so we have a better experience eating the dish."

All courses -- sent down via a tiny elevator near the kitchen above -- are paired with a selection of top wines, selected by the resort's sommelier.
In addition to the seven-course dinner menu there's a four- or seven-course lunch. Diners from other resorts are welcome to visit -- provided they don't have kids in tow. Hurawalhi is an adults-only resort.
According to van den Oever, some diners even fly in just for lunch.
"I became a chef because I wanted to make people happy," he says. "And with a restaurant like this, it's very easy."

If you build it, the fish will come

The natural reef landscape framing 5.8 was created by Hurawalhi dive instructor Paige Bennett.
"Basically what I did is [find] dislodged coral blocks, which were not healthy," she says. "Then, I transported them to the restaurant in hopes that it would start to regain these coral animals that live inside."
In the beginning, it was an experiment, so she started out with small pieces. Then, after a couple of weeks, the corals regrew.
