Alaska와 Yukon주는 꼭 한번 가고싶은 곳이다. 그것도 비행기고 가는게 아니고, 자동차로 시간의 구애 받지 않고, 주유천하 하면서, 그렇게 자연속을 헤매면서 둘러보고 싶은 곳이다. 우선 빙산으로 둘러쌓여 있다고 하는곳과, 많이 않은 우리한인들도 그곳에 몇집에 영주 거주하고 있다는 곳도 들려 보고 싶은 곳이다.
시골에서 여름철에 생활하면서, Fire Wood 를 camper들을 상대로 팔면서, 그이유를 손으로 꼽을수 없을 만큼 많은 이유들이, 그들을 텐트속에서 모기와 싸우면서 며칠간 생활하게 되는 특별한 마력이 그렇게 만들었다는 설명을 듣다보면, 수긍이 가기도 한다.
한젊은 친구는 남자친구가 별로 자연속에서 딩구는것을 좋아하지 않아, 훈련의 차원에서 이곳까지 와서 Camping을 하게 됐다는 열성스런 젊은 여성도 있었다. 가능하면 원시시대를 많이 느껴 볼려고 Camping을 한다는 친구들도 있었고..... 암튼 이유가 천태만상이다. 그런 이유들중의 하나가 나에게도 해당되여, 그렇게 알라스카를 향해 자동차로 달려 보고픈, 그리고 Wild life들과 조우도 해보고픈 의미에서 일 것이다. Gould 라는 친구의 알라스카 붙박이 생활을 읽어 봤다.
알라스카에 있는 Kenai Fjords National Park에 있는 Aialik만의 군데군데 평평한 해안을 따라, 오직 해수면이 최고로 높을때에만 접근이 가능한, 산들이 바다로 부터 빙하를 조각한것 같은 틀에 둘러쌓여있는 라군(lagoon)이 환상적이다. Trenton Gould 는, 연어를 사냥하기위해 흑곰들이 해안가를 어슬렁거리고, 바다새,바다 Otter,해안가에 서식하는 바다사자들의 안식처에, 해수면이 가장 높을때, 무사히 카약(Kayak)으로 도착 할수 있는 시간을 맟추어 갈수 있도록 안내를 해준다.
Pedersen 빙산을 둘러싸고 있는 높은 해수면은, Kayak Adventures Worldwide 로 탐험을 하는 패들러들을 위해 환상적인 뒷장면을 보여주는 빙산을 운반해주기도 한다. Gould씨는 그의 동업자, Tess Tulley와 함께 2014년도에 여행사를 매입해 버렸다. “Pedersen에는 아주크고, 아름다운 얼음조각들이 떠있는 바다가 믿기지 않을 정도로 잔잔 했다. 아마도 당신에 볼때에는 수많은 잘 조각된 얼음덩이들이 떠다니는것으로 느낄수 있을 것이다” 라고 Gould씨는 설명이다.
이러한 주위경관에 매료되여 Gould씨는 Kayak용품을 파는곳에서 일자리를 찾아 일하다가 지금은 아예 주인이 되고 말았지만, 그가 일자리를 찾을려고 할때, 알라스카를 한번도 방문해 본적이 없는 문외한이었었다. 남부 캘리포니아 태생인 그는 Vermont에서 야생적응 지도자 학위를 얻은후에 첫번째 투어 비즈니스를 시작한다. 3년후에 그는 십대들을 상대로 지구촌 여행써비스를 하는회사에 합류하게된다.
Today, Gould encourages people to trade crowded tour boats for kayak paddles and experience their own natural enlightenment in Kenai Fjords National Park. “When you’re kayaking, you’re right on the water,” he explained. “You can feel the water. You can taste it, if you want to. You can pick up pieces of glacial ice that are floating by, or even snack on seaweed.”
Piloting between icebergs near the Aialik Glacier remains one of Gould’s favourite park experiences, both with travellers and on his own explorations. The 1.6km-wide glacier, Aialik Bay’s largest, towers over the water. During active periods, chunks of ice tumble from its iconic face.
“You're paddling, and suddenly it gets really loud. The ice is cracking and the water is bubbling, and air that’s been trapped in that ice for 10,000 years is escaping. You’re sitting at sea level, and you can feel the water moving the kayak,” Gould said.
Aialik Bay promises unforgettable adventures even on quieter days. Sea lions, sea otters and bald eagles are common, and some people see orcas and humpback whales. Spectacular landscapes surround the bay, as well.
“In late May and early June, for example, you get this amazing contrast. Wildflowers bloom at the bottom of the hill, and the alder trees are turning green. But at the top, there are jagged peaks still covered in snow,” Gould said. “I’ve sat in front of the Aialik Glacier hundreds of times, and it’s still mind-blowing... It’s so wild out there.”
As Gould and his team provide these immersive, engaging trips, they also help travellers better appreciate Alaska’s geography and natural history. Guides discuss how glaciers sustain local wildlife, and they teach people to protect the state’s delicate environment. Kayak Adventures Worldwide employs a leave-no-trace philosophy, which means that guides and guests replace rocks moved during beach stops, avoid lighting campfires on overnight journeys and carry waste out of the wilderness after excursions.
“On tours, we talk about how to visit a wild place without leaving an impact – not just here in Alaska, but in general,” Gould said. “When we pull up to the beach near a glacier, each person who gets off the boat should feel like they're the first person walking on that beach.”
