BTC에서 회원들에게 일년에 4번씩 보내주는 Bruce Trail Magazine,2011년도 Spring판(Vol.48 No2)이 배달되여 내용을 보면서, 재미있는 컬럼을 하나 보았다. 다름아닌, 우리 부부를 포함한 산사모팀과, 교회팀 그리고 다른 많은 등산객들이 즐겨 걷는 BTC(Bruce Trail Conservancy)와 고국의 제주도에 있는 '올레 파운데이션"간에 자매 결연을 맺고 서로 Trail Walker들을 교환하여 서로 바꾸어 Trail을 걷고, Trail의 일정 구간을 정해 Trail sign을 바꾸어 설치하고,정보도 교환 하기로 했다는 기사를 보았다. BTC에서 자원 봉사자로 수고하면서 자원봉사자 프로그램을 맡아 수고하는, Jackie Randle씨가 고국을 방문하고, 그때 제주에서 처음열린 국제 Trail Conference에서 세계 여러나라에서 모인 관련자들과 뜻깊은 회의를 했었다고 한다. 앞으로 고국방문 기회가 주어지면 BTC membership Card를 Backpack에 매달고 걸어보고픈 마음이다 여기에 그분의 Column을 옮겨 놓는다.

2010년 11월에 한국의 아름다운 제주도에서 첫번째 World Trail Conference가 개최됐었다. 제주도는 한반도 끝에서 약 130킬로 남쪽으로 떨어져 있는 섬이다. 제주도섬은 화산 폭발로 흘러내린 갈색의 용암으로 형성되여 있다. 제주도는 한국에서는 처음으로 UNESCO의 세계 자연유산으로 등재 되였으며, 지난 3년간 "제주올레"이라는 새로운 등산로를 개척하여 등산객들이 이용하고 있다. "올레"는 원래 제주도 방언으로 문밖에서 집안으로 이어지는 좁은 고삿길을 의미 한다고 한다. 또 올레는 신비에 둘러싸인 방에서 시작하여 모두가 이용하는 동네길로 이어지며 또한 전세계를 향한 길이라는 뜻도 포함하고 있다. 또 이말속에는 "어서 오십시요"라는 뜻도 포함되여 있어 결국 제주 올레는 "제주도에 오십시요"라는 뜻이 그속에 있다고 하겠다.
제주올레 Trail을 만든 서명숙씨는 스페인 방문시 "산티아고 Trail"을 걸으면서 그곳에서 감명을 받아 개척하기 시작했다고 한다. 그녀는 귀국하면 등산로를 개척하여 전세계로 부터 제주를 방문하는 등산객들을 위한 Hiking Trail을 개척하기로 결심하고, 그녀와 팀원들이 의기 투합하여, 동네 사람들이 즐겨 이용하던 좁은 등산로위에 Trail을 만들기 시작한 것이다. 그 첫번째 Trail은 2007년 9월에 완료되여 일반에게 공개하게된 것이다. 그후 '제주올레 라운데이션'은 게속해서 작업을 하여 지금은 제주도내에 약 200 Km의 Walking Trail을 개설 운용하고 있다. 현재 11개의 Trail route가 일반에게 사용되고 있으며,새 Route를 만드는 작업은 지금도 계속되고 있다.
2010년 9월에 '제주올레 파운데이션'에서 2명의 임원이 BTC의 최고 책임자 Beth Kummling과 자원 봉사자 프로그램 담당자 Jackie Randle을 만나기위해 캐나다를 방문 했었다. 그들의 방문 목적은 BTC에 대한 많은 정보와 우리가 하고 있는 일들에 대해 더 알아보기위해서 였다. 그때 그곳과 이곳의 두 Trail을 연결시키면 좋겠다는 구상을 하게 됐던 것이다. 2010년 Jackie가 제주도에서 처음 개최된 World Trail Conference에 초대되여 참석했는데 회의 의제는 Trail에 관심이 많은 세계각처의 사람들을 한곳에 모이게 하기위한 것이었으며, 그회의에서 스위스와 영국의 Cotwold에 있는 여러 Trail과 자매 결연을 맺도록 하는 것이었읍니다.
Jackie는 '제주올레 파운데이션'의 지원을 받고 제주도에 5일간 머물렀으며, 그곳에서 그녀는 제주도의 아름다움과 주민들이 푸른 초원을 보호 하려는 주민들의 열정에 매료 되였었다고 한다. Jackie는 제주올레길의 여러 구간을 걸어볼 기회를 갖었었는데, 각 Trail코스는 제주섬을 빙 둘러 이어지는 속에서 그 특유의 전망과 제주섬의 특성을 보여주고 있음에 매료됐었다. 이번 회의에서 자매결연을 맺는 Trail을 연결 시키자는 구상이, Trail들을 서로 연결시켜 국제적인 관광과 상호협조를 촉진 시키기위한 방법으로 서로 자매결연을 맺자는 구상이 구체적으로 논의 됐었다. 이구상의 일환으로 제주올레 파운데이션의 제주올레와 BTC간에 자매 결연을 맺고, 제주올레 Trail 두곳에 BTC의 Trail 표시를 세우기로 서로 합의 했다. 전체 17Km인 이구간은, 2개의 백사장과 동쪽편 해안선을 내려다 볼수 있는 정상(Peak)간을 연결해주며, 또 짠물이 고여 있는 호수를 통과하는 구간이다. 이에 대한 답례로 BTC는, 제주올레파운데이션에서 제공해 주는 Trail표시를 새로 개발하는 Side Trail에 부착하기로 했다. 우리는 머지않아 이 Side Trail이 개척되여 조만간에 등산객들이 걸을수 있도록 추진중에 있음을 알려 드린다.

South Korea.
The beautiful island of Jeju, South Korea, was the setting for the first ever World Trail Conference in November 2010. Jeju Island is located 130 kilometers south of the Korean Peninsula. The island is volcanic and is covered with dark-brown volcanic rock and soil. Jeju Island has become the first Korean natural heritage site to be added to UNESCO's World Heritage Site List and in the past three years a new trail has been created on this island called the Jeju Olle. "Olle" is the Jeju word for a narrow pathway that connects the street to the front gate of a house. Olle is a path that comes out from a secret room to an open space and a gateway to the world. It has the same meaning as "Would you come?" in Korean, therefore Jeju's Olle means "Would you come to Jeju?"
Jeju Olle's founder Suh Myungsook was inspired by the Santiago Trail in Spain. She decided to create a hiking trail in her home country that would be used by walkers from all over the world. She and her team began building trail on old paths that were used by villagers on Jeju. The first trail route was opened to the public in September 2007.
Since then the Jeju Olle Foundation has created a combined total of 200 Km of walking trails on Jeju Island. Currently eleven trail routes have been opened to walkers and they continue to work on new routes.
At the end of September 2010, two representatives from the Jeju Olle Foundation came to Canada to meet with BTC Executive Director Beth Kummling and Director of Volunteer Programs Jackie Randle. The purpose of the meeting was to learn more about the Bruce Trail, the BTC and the work that we do. At that time an idea was formed of creating a link between the two trails.
In November 2010, Jackie was invited to attend the first World Trail Conference on Jeju Island. The conference was designed to bring together people interested in trails from around the world and so far they have created friendship trails with Switzerland and the Cotswold trail in England. Jackie spent 5 days on Jeju Island, sponsored by Jeju Olle Foundation, and was impressed with the beauty of the island and the passion of the people to preserve their green spaces. She had an opportunity to hike on a few different sections of the Jeju Olle. Each section of the trail offers a unique view and perspective of the Island as it makes its way around the island's circumference.
At the conference, the idea of a friendship trail was further built upon as a way to promote international tourism and cooperation between trails. As part of the friendship agreement between the BTC and Jeju Olle, the Jeju Olle Foundation has agreed to post Bruce Trail signs on route two of the Jeju Olle. This 17 Km route connects two beaches, crosses a peak where you can enjoy views of the eastern coast line, and passes an inland salt pond. In return the BTC will create a new side trail with signage provided by the Jeju Olle Foundation. We look forward to announcing the opening this trail some day soon!.
