The meeting, and Trump's stern demeanor, also underscored how the heavy burden of the presidency begins to settle on the shoulders of a President-elect.
Smooth transition.
The temporary truce between the White House and Trump and his Republican Party however obscures the deep shock, and disquiet about Trump and his temperament inside the White House and among Democrats.
CNN's Jim Acosta said one senior White House official responded with a single word -- "unbelievable" when asked about Trump's comment that he would seek "counsel" from the current President. The official said no one in the White House had changed their mind about Trump, despite their commitment to a smooth political transition.
Still, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that given the history between them, the meeting between Obama and Trump in which they were alone in the Oval Office, was "a little less awkward" than might be expected and they did not recreate some kind of presidential debate during the talks over their stark political differences.
While Trump and Obama met, first lady Michelle Obama spent time with Trump's wife, Melania.
Trump's first visit to Washington began as the President-elect began around 10:30 a.m. when the plane emblazoned with his last name landed at Reagan National Airport, marking a new beginning for America.
Trump went to meet House Speaker Paul Ryan on Capitol Hill after the White House visit and also saw Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell while in town. Vice President-elect Mike Pence met Vice President Joe Biden.
After meeting McConnell, Trump outlined his priorities.
"We'll look very strongly at immigration. We're going to look at the border, very important. We're going to look very strongly on health care. And we're looking at jobs, big league jobs."
While Trump and Obama were meeting, the billionaire's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and communications aide Hope Hicks met senior members of the White House staff.
Earnest said that Obama briefed Trump on his last foreign trip -- to Greece, Germany and Peru next week -- and that the President left the talks with "renewed confidence" that Trump was committed to a smooth transition.
Singapore (CNN)Nearly five hours of unprecedented and surreal talks
between US President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un
culminated on Tuesday with fulsome declarations of a new friendship but
just vague pledges of nuclear disarmament.
For Trump, that amounted to a triumphant outcome in his extraordinary gamble
with the rogue kingdom's despotic leader. But there were scant details
on what new commitments had been secured from Kim, even as Trump
announced he would end the regular military exercises the US conducts
with South Korea.
Whether nuclear disarmament
is indeed the final outcome of Tuesday's summit won't be known for
years, if not decades. But the dramatic act of extending his hand to one
of America's longtime adversaries will forever illustrate Trump's
gut-driven, norm-shattering tenure.
"We
both want to do something. We both are going to do something. And we
have developed a very special bond," Trump said at the conclusion of the
landmark summit. "People are going to be very impressed. People are
going to be very happy."
The document he and Kim signed
said the North Korean leader "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering
commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula." In
exchange, Trump agreed to "provide security guarantees" to North Korea.
But
there was no mentioning the previous US aim of "complete, verifiable
and irreversible denuclearization." And Kim's commitments did not appear
to go beyond what he already pledged to do in April when he met South
Korean President Moon Jae-in along their countries' border.
Trump
insisted during a news conference the agreement went further than many
people expected. But he acknowledged the effort to rid North Korea of
its nuclear arsenal was in its early stages.
"We will do it as fast as it can mechanically and physically be done," he said.
More
critical, in Trump's telling, was the development of a personal bond
with Kim, a brutal dictator responsible for the deaths not only of his
own citizens but of at least one American, Otto Warmbier, who was
returned to the US in a coma only to die days later.
"I
think our whole relationship with North Korea and the Korean Peninsula
is going to be a very much different situation than it has in the past,"
Trump said during the summit.
Later, during his news conference, Trump said Warmbier's death contributed to the summit taking place.
"Without Otto, this would not have happened," Trump said.
Trump's
threats to politely walk out of the meeting if his expectations were
unmet did not materialize. Instead he predicted he could "solve a big
problem, a big dilemma" alongside his new partner.
"Working together, we'll get it taken care of," Trump said.
The
remarks came amid an improbable series of events that few could have
anticipated even three months ago. The unlikely images of US and North
Korean counterparts engaging in friendly dialogue lent the day an air of
unreality. In a detailed menu, the White House said the men were served
Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Even Kim seemed to acknowledge the surreality of the day.
"Many
people in the world will think of this as a (inaudible) form of fantasy
... from a science fiction movie," his translator was overheard saying
as the two leaders walked down a white-columned colonnade.
At the conclusion of the summit, Trump hailed the talks as a historic, and personal, achievement.
"We learned a lot about each other and our countries," Trump said. "I learned he's a very talented man."
When pressed about those comments in
light of Kim's brutal tactics, Trump continued praising the North Korean
leaders' ability to run a country at a young age.
"He
is very talented," Trump said, citing Kim's ability to "take over a
situation like he did at 26 years of age and run it, and run it tough."
Kim assumed power after his father Kim Jong Il, also a brutal dictator, died in 2011.
Throughout
the day, Trump and Kim's body language was openly friendly, a striking
warmth given Kim's iron grip on power and dismal record on human rights.
Trump's move to meet him attracted fierce criticism for normalizing a
regime routinely called out for its human rights abuses, that over years
has built an image of fearsome renegade regime, throwing around threats
of nuclear war.
The
day began with Trump patting Kim on the back and placing his hand on
the North Korean's shoulder as they walked into their first meeting.
Later they were seen smiling and laughing over lunch.
Trump told reporters he would "absolutely" extend an invitation to the White House to Kim, who also heralded a new era.
"Today,
we had a historic meeting and decided to leave the past behind," Kim
said through a translator. "The world will see a major change."
The
meeting came only months after the two men traded nuclear taunts,
ratcheting up tensions and leading to fears of war. By contrast, Trump
appeared to back off a military footing on Tuesday, declaring the US
will stop the "war games," an apparent reference to joint military
exercises with South Korea that North Korea has long rebuked as
provocative.
Trump also said he
hopes to eventually withdraw US forces from South Korea, but said
"that's not part of the equation right now."
"I
want to get our soldiers out. I want to bring our soldiers back home,"
Trump said. "But that's not part of the equation right now. I hope it
will be eventually."
Tuesday's meeting, convened at a luxury hotel on
the island of Sentosa, came just three months after Trump accepted
North Korea's invitation for talks on the spot. It was an
extraordinarily compressed timeline for the landmark summit, which at
one point was called off entirely as communication broke down between
Washington and Pyongyang.
The talks were quickly revived, leading to the highly choreographed event that unfolded Tuesday.
After
the men shook hands, they repaired inside for one-on-one talks. In that
first meeting they were joined only by translators, a break from
standard practice of having at least one aide present for high-stakes
huddles.
Later in the day, advisers joined the talks for a larger bilateral session and a working lunch.
Trump
took keen interest in the pageantry of the day, insisting the pictures
beamed around the world reflect a commanding leader making a decisive,
world-altering move. At the same time, he'd admitted he didn't believe
he required extensive preparation to take stock of Kim.
As
part of the advance work, Trump commissioned a highly produced video
meant to convince Kim to relinquish his weapons and open his country to
outside investment. Trump showed Kim the movie on an iPad during their
talks.
Here in futuristic Singapore, however, Kim was able to view the benefits of economic advancement at close range. He was spotted taking a moonlit stroll around the high-end Marina Bay Sands hotel and casino,
owned by GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, the type of glitzy development
few North Koreans could ever imagine coming to their country.
Kim
was cheered by onlookers who caught sight of the dictator, who until
earlier this spring was not believed to have ever left North Korea as
supreme leader.
Trump pardoned former campaign aide George Papadopoulos and Dutch lawyer Alex Van der Zwaan, who both had pleaded guilty to lying to investigators during the Russia probe. The pardons likely signal a coming effort by Trump to unravel the damning results of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, which presented evidence that he had potentially obstructed justice and detailed the many questionable contacts between Trump acolytes and Russia during an election in which the Kremlin intervened to help Trump.
The President also pardoned two Border Patrol agents convicted in 2006 of shooting and wounding an unarmed undocumented immigrant and then covering it up.
The wave of pardons announced by the President on Tuesday was perfectly within his constitutional powers. And many other presidents have offered clemency in a way that has provided get-out-of-jail-free cards to supporters caught up in scandals. But no modern president has so defiantly used the privilege for political ends or so short-circuited the Justice Department's procedures for presidential clemency. And the pardons announced on Tuesday are likely only a down payment on more controversial moves in the days ahead.

Former Rep. Duncan Hunter, a California Republican who was sentenced earlier this year to 11 months in prison and three years of supervised release related to his misuse of more than $200,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses, was also pardoned.
Another vocal Trump supporter, former Rep. Chris Collins, a New York Republican, will be sprung from jail, where he has just started serving a 26-month term after admitting conspiracy to commit securities fraud and making a false statement.
The four Blackwater guards -- Nicholas Slatten, Paul Slough, Evan Liberty and Dustin Heard -- were convicted by a federal jury in 2014. Prosecutors accused the men of illegally unleashing "powerful sniper fire, machine guns and grenade launchers on innocent men, women and children."
Blackwater said its convoy had come under attack, and defense attorneys said in court that witness accounts were fabricated. But witnesses testified that the contractors had opened fire without provocation.
The White House said their pardons were supported by a number of members of Congress along with Pete Hegseth, the conservative Fox News host who is an ally of the President's.
President Trump granted clemency on Tuesday to 20 people, including three former Republican members of Congress and two people who were convicted of crimes as part of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
He also pardoned four military contractors convicted of killing 14 unarmed Iraqi civilians in Baghdad in 2007, and extended clemency to several people convicted of drug offenses, including some who had already benefited from initial commutations.
The pre-Christmas pardons and commutations came as the president has been exploring how to reward friends and allies in his waning days in the White House, with more acts of clemency expected to come.
Trump has told advisers he wants to be liberal with pardons and plans to sign more before leaving office on Jan. 20, according to people familiar with his views. The White House has been flooded with requests from dozens of members of Congress, one senior administration official said, as well as lawyers, lobbyists, allies and other supporters of the president.
What is a presidential pardon?
At the end of most presidencies, one of the last things a president does is issue pardons. Will President Trump attempt to pardon himself and his family? (The Washington Post)
The first batch released Tuesday night shows how the president is using the power of his office to undo the work of the Russia probe that shadowed much of his term, undercut major cases that took on political corruption and wave away the crimes of Americans convicted of participating in a massacre during the Iraq War.
Democrats accused Trump of abusing his pardon power to reward allies and undermine the rule of law.
“If you lie to cover up for the President, you get a pardon,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) said in a statement. “If you are a corrupt politician who endorsed Trump, you get a pardon. If you murder civilians while at war, you get a pardon.”
Trump gave a full pardon to George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to his 2016 campaign who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during its Russia investigation.
Papadopoulos in 2017 agreed he had misled the FBI about his interactions with a London-based professor who claimed Russia had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic rival, in the form of thousands of emails. In 2018, Papadopoulos served his 14-day prison sentence.
But the onetime energy adviser, 33, later actively sought a pardon to expunge his record and bolster his post-conviction claims that he had been unfairly targeted by the U.S. authorities, including special counsel Robert S. Mueller III — allegations that echoed Trump’s own grievances against the Mueller probe.
Shortly after the pardon was announced, Papadopoulos tweeted, “Thank you, Mr. President!!! This means the world to me and my family!”
Trump also pardoned Alex van der Zwaan, a Dutch lawyer who had worked with Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort in work related to Ukraine and pleaded guilty in 2018 to lying to Mueller’s team. He served 30 days in prison before returning to his home in London.
The president has now used his powers to personally intervene and grant clemency in multiple cases that Mueller brought against his former advisers. In November, he pardoned former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his dealings with a Russian diplomat, though he later sought to withdraw that plea. In July, the president commuted the sentence of his longtime friend, Roger Stone, who was convicted of seeking to impede a congressional investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and sentenced to 40 months in prison.
The Papadopoulos pardon serves as a particularly pointed jab by the president at the Russia investigation, which shadowed the first half of his term in office. It was a July 2016 tip about the young campaign volunteer that first led the FBI to open an investigation into whether members of the Trump campaign were conspiring with the Kremlin.
“Today’s pardon helps correct the wrong that Mueller’s team inflicted on so many people,” the White House said in a statement Tuesday night.
There are approximately 14,000 people in line for pardons and commutations. For years, criminal justice advocates have criticized Republican and Democratic administrations alike for backlogs that left thousands of rehabilitated people seeking mercy to languish in prison.
Trump has moved even more slowly than his predecessors, who acted on hundreds or thousands of petitions by the end of four years in office. And rather than consult with the Justice Department’s pardon attorney for recommendations, Trump has routinely subverted the process and largely favored political allies and those who are well-connected for clemency.
The White House statement about Trump’s actions Tuesday noted who had recommended each pardon and commutation, a group that included Republican members of Congress and other Trump allies. Of the 20 people who received clemency, only seven had active petitions for pardons or clemency listed in online Justice Department records.
Trump’s decision to pardon elected officials who had admitted wrongdoing — as well as prominent business executives who had engaged in fraud and other white-collar crimes — flies in the face of his onetime campaign promise to “drain the swamp” in American political and corporate life.
Among those pardoned were three former Republican congressmen, each of them convicted of federal offenses during the Trump administration. Two had been early and avid supporters of Trump’s campaign.
Former congressman Duncan D. Hunter (R-Calif.) — who prosecutors alleged used hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds to pay for family vacations and theater tickets, and even to facilitate extramarital affairs — had been facing an 11-month federal prison sentence. He pleaded guilty in 2019 to misusing campaign funds. Hunter notably won reelection while under federal indictment, only to later admit wrongdoing and resign.
Former congressman Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) had been serving a 26-month sentence for an insider-trading scheme and lying to the FBI. He, too, had pleaded guilty in the case.
Collins and Hunter were among Trump’s first congressional supporters and the investigations into their activities had long rankled the president, who would castigate his attorney general at the time, Jeff Sessions, for allowing the cases to move forward, according to White House officials and Trump advisers. Trump used to speak regularly to Collins.
Former congressman Steve Stockman (R-Tex.) was about two years into a 10-year sentence, having been convicted in 2018 of conspiring to take hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations that were meant for charity and voter education.
Among those who had signed a petition seeking mercy for Stockman was attorney Sidney Powell, who has been pushing Trump’s false allegations that his election loss came as a result of fraud.
Trump also pardoned a Republican member of the Utah House of Representatives, Phil Lyman. Lyman was sentenced to spend 10 days in jail for his role in a 2014 all-terrain vehicle demonstration that was intended to protest federal land management practices. He has insisted he was the victim of selective prosecution, and his case had been championed by other Utah Republicans.
The four private security contractors Trump pardoned — Nicholas Slatten, Paul Slough, Evan Liberty and Dustin Heard — all worked for the now infamous Blackwater Worldwide security company, founded by Trump supporter Erik Prince.
Trump has long viewed Prince as an ally, and mused about giving him more government contracts during his presidency, according to White House officials and Trump advisers.
The September 2007 shooting in which the Blackwater contractors were involved left 14 dead and 17 wounded and set off a diplomatic crisis on oversight of American security contractors during one of the deadliest periods in the Iraq War.
Slatten had been sentenced to life in prison; Slough and Liberty to 15 years; and Heard to 12 years and seven months.
Trump also granted pardons to two former Border Patrol agents whose sentences for shooting a suspected drug smuggler fleeing their custody had been previously commuted.
According to the White House and news accounts from the time, the agents — Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean — were working near El Paso when they shot the suspected smuggler, Osvaldo Aldrete Dávila, as he tried to get away from them.
Compean was sentenced to 12 years in prison and Ramos to 11 years. President George W. Bush had commuted their sentences.
Trump extended pardons and commutations to several people who have been active in criminal justice reform or whose causes were championed by others in that field.
But most of the drug offenders who received executive mercy had already benefited from having their sentences lifted. In February, Trump had commuted the sentences of Crystal Munoz, Tynice Nichole Hall and Judith Negron; on Tuesday he wiped away their terms of supervised release. Weldon Angelos was released early after federal court action; Trump gave him a full pardon.
A statement from the White House indicated that four men and women who received clemency had been recommended by Alice Johnson, the woman whose own prison sentence after a drug conviction was commuted by Trump in 2018 following lobbying by the celebrity Kim Kardashian.
Johnson later received a full pardon after speaking at the 2020 Republican National Convention and has been speaking with Trump and senior White House advisers in recent weeks, aides said.
In recent months, Johnson has given the president and senior White House advisers names of people to consider for clemency, eschewing the traditional process.
In a statement Tuesday night, Johnson called Angelos “an incredible advocate for criminal justice reform.”
“We worked together tirelessly to help others gain their freedom,” she said. “Now to see his life fully restored is truly a blessing — just in time for Christmas! I’m so happy for him and thankful for this act of mercy.”
US President Donald Trump has urged North Korea to "come to the table" and discuss giving up its nuclear weapons.
Striking a different tone from previous fiery rhetoric, he said he "hoped to God" he did not have to use the US military against Pyongyang.
Mr Trump was speaking at a press conference with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in in Seoul, as part of his tour of Asia.
At a press conference, Mr Trump and Mr Moon reiterated their call for the North to denuclearise, with Mr Trump saying it "makes sense for North Korea to come to the table", and to "do the right thing, not only for North Korea but for humanity all over the world".
Though the US had deployed a significant military presence in the region, he said he "hoped to God" he would not have to use it against North Korea.
The two leaders also called on China and Russia to put pressure on Pyongyang, and said they were lifting the limit on South Korean missile payloads, which they had agreed to do in September.
President Trump didn’t threaten to unleash “fire and fury” or to “totally destroy” North Korea. He didn’t needle Kim Jong Un by calling him “little rocket man.”
Instead, at a news conference in South Korea’s capital Tuesday within range of North Korean artillery, Trump spoke in unusually measured tones and called on North Korea’s ruler to “come to the table and make a deal” to give up its growing nuclear weapons arsenal.
Trump delivered threats as well, calmly listing the firepower the U.S. currently has pointed at the Korean Peninsula, including three carrier strike groups and a nearby nuclear submarine — as well as “many things happening that we hope, we hope — in fact, I'll go a step further, we hope to God we never have to use.”
“I do see certain movement, yes,” Trump said at the joint news conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. “But let's see what happens.”
White House advisers didn't expect to hear less of Trump's fiery talk during this trip — and even Trump defended its use.
Declaring an end to the "era of strategic patience" with Pyongyang during a press conference in Tokyo on Monday, Trump said that his "rhetoric is very strong, but look what's happened with weak rhetoric over the last 25 years."
North Korea has said in public statements that it wants an official end to the Korean War. It also wants full normalization of relations with the U.S. and to be treated with respect and as an equal in the global arena.
Trump and Moon also discussed their countries' trade agreements. During the press conference Trump criticized the current agreement, calling it "unsuccessful and not very good for the U.S."
Wrapping the first day of his visit to Korea, the President and First Lady attended a state banquet hosted by South Korean President Moon and his wife.
An orchestra and pianist at one point played “My Way,” a song popular with the Trump campaign. At the front of the room, a large video monitor played a montage of pictures of the two leaders together over the last year.
President Moon and Trump both gave toasts. Moon took the podium first, and noted the upcoming anniversary of the US President’s election victory. He then toasted to Trump's good health.
During his toast, thanked President Moon and his wife for welcoming he and Melania for their first visit to South Korea. Trump then proposed his own toast, expressing his wish that “freedom flourish on this peninsula.”
Protests against Mr Trump, as well as counter-rallies welcoming him, have been held in Seoul and elsewhere.
Many in South Korea are hoping that Mr Trump will not repeat his strong rhetoric against North Korea, which many here regard as unnecessary and incendiary, says our correspondent.
Mr Trump will be going to China, Vietnam and the Philippines in the coming week.
